"Publish or perish", the never ending academic dilemma, brought with it a new market, and a new industry to supply it: scientific journals for every scientist – young or old, undergraduate or professor, with limited budget or a research grant winner.
Every day I receive at least two emails calling for papers, from journals that probably don't even exist. It’s either that or I don't have the courage to access the links they send in order to find out.Especially if they ask me to enter my Gmail password again. And I am not counting here the phantom electronic issues of old and renowned print-only traditional journals.
Then there is the issue of the impact of the article. Unable to quantify how many physicians or professionals in general will read the scientific study and will apply its novel data in their day-to-day practice, the industry quantifies how many scientists will cite a certain study in their own papers.
First introduced by Thomson Reuters, the original impact factor is now being "redesigned” by various other scientific databases, in various new forms and formats. Of course, the validity of these new metrics is questionable, but nevertheless they are out there, there are people reading them, there are independent open access journals and open access publishing houses hosting tens of open access journals which rely on them, and so on.
So, one might ask if there is a place in this overcrowded scientific publishing industry for a new startup, for a(nother) new scientific journal. I would certainly hope there is. With a broad scope covering different areas of medicine, the Journal of Contemporary Clinical Practice focuses on one extremely important, undeniable truth: the need for interdisciplinarity in the daily medical practice. We are not treating diseases, we are treating patients, and the care that we supply should be patient-oriented, driven by collaboration with peers from other medical specialties in order to offer the best possible therapeutic management.
To this end, the Journal of Contemporary Clinical Practice aims to provide evidence-based articles from relevant therapeutic domains, aiding in the transition from bench to bedside and translating fundamental research into patient-centered personalized medical care.
